What is art?

It’s the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

Art is a diverse range of human activities involving the creation of visual, auditory or performing artifacts, which express the creator’s imagination, conceptual ideas, or technical skill, intended to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. (Wikipedia)

The Knysna Art Route is a work in progress and is a great activity for when the weather is not at its best.   Starting off in the well known Knysna Forests, the San Ambroso Chapel Museum is a small building in Gouna. The Chapel was built as a Roman Catholic Church in 1891 for the Italian immigrants who came to establish a silk industry in South Africa based on the misinformation that Mulberry trees grew plentifully in the forest.

Stop off at Timber Village and view the many pieces of furniture made from the indigenous wood found in the area.

There are a number of small art galleries dotted around the town and on Thesen Island.  You may well find some artefact to take home with you to remind you of the time you have spent in our beautiful town.

Knysna = an artist’s paradise!
