Knysna is the home of adventure along the Garden Route. Our natural surroundings make for the perfect playground for adventure sports of all kinds.
Kilometres of exciting single cycling tracks through indigenous forests and Cape fynbos has made Knysna THE mountain biking destination. Add six annual MTB events, along with private operators offering adventure as well as leisure rides, hit the saddle! Knysna’s MTB offerings include adrenaline pumping pedalling and family friendly rides for all ages.
The forests, coastal routes, rolling hills and mountains are criss-crossed with hiking and running trails. Trail runners will be challenged and families will enjoy easy hikes. And everyone will enjoy the incredible beauty of Knysna.
Take to the sky in Sedgefield, the unofficial paragliding Mecca on South Africa’s Garden Route. If flying conditions aren’t ideal in Sedgefield, Brenton offers an alternative site for take-off.
Of course Knysna is right in the middle of the Garden Route National Park, very much like the Lakes District in the UK. An endless network of rivers, lakes and estuaries are waiting to be explored. Grab a canoe, go kloofing or try water-skiing, stand up paddling or wakeboarding – Knysna is your water sports adventure wonderland. Stretches of unspoilt beaches along the warm waters of the Indian Ocean add even more to the range of adventures to be had. Snorkel along the coast or scuba dive at the notorious Knysna heads, head through the Heads on an exciting whale watching trip or enjoy world class surfing at Buffalo Bay.
But there’s still more to explore… enjoy a safari experience or animal adventure at one of the many sanctuaries nearby. Meet our elephants at the Knysna Elephant Park, marvel at some of the big cats at Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary or Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre, wonder at the beauty of birds at Birds of Eden and catch up with distant family members as you come face to face with friendly and curious primates at Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary.
At the centre of the Garden Route, Knysna is the ideal base from which to explore the rest of the region’s scenic towns – and hosts a number of award winning golf courses.
And if you’ve had enough adventure for one day, spoil yourself with some shopping, a sunset cruise on the Knysna estuary, a visit to the nearby winelands, a relaxing massage or a delicious meal at any of our amazing restaurants offering a variety of tastes and cuisines.
